Turn off your mind & go to sleep
Police officer referred these to me. Non-addictive… I only take half and it helps on those nights I can’t sleep. Not suggesting every day use.

Doxylamine Succinate is probably the best OTC sleep aid
Doxylamine Succinate is probably the best OTC sleep aid you can get without a prescription. Take it about 30mins to a hour before you want to be asleep by. Once you take it, you need to be in bed, relaxing and decompressing for it to work. If you take it but then continue to do stuff, anything other than getting in bed ready to go to sleep, then it won’t work, you’re defeating its purpose. Take it and get into bed. It helps me go to sleep, stay asleep, and if I get up in the middle of the night, I’m able to quickly go back to sleep. This one is a good deal compared to Unisom brand.

This insomniac says thank you!
I’ve struggled with falling and staying asleep for as long as I can remember, literally since I was a teenager. I don’t really want to use prescription medication to sleep – although that’s the only thing that truly works for me – so I’m constantly looking for something else that works. One of those things is doxylamine. The typical container at the grocery store has about 24 tablets and costs around $10. When I found this at Costco, I couldn’t believe how huge the container was and how little it cost. I don’t have a Costco membership anymore, but here it is, so I will continue to buy it. I take a pill about an hour before bed, along with melatonin and valerian root, and after about an hour or sometimes two, I fall asleep. I usually stay asleep for most of the night when I take this cocktail. This works better and lasts longer than Benadryl (active ingredient: diphenhydramine) and as long as I allow myself eight or nine hours between taking this medication and the time I need to get up, I don’t feel overly tired in the morning – you know, the “hangover” feeling.I recommend this highly if you can’t sleep. The price is great and it works!

Sadly, no help for me
Unfortunately, this didn’t help my sleeplessness. I don’t have trouble falling asleep, but staying asleep, and I still woke up nearly hourly when I took this sleep aid. (Tried 4 times and no-go.) On a positive note, there was no next-day grog, so if it works for you, that’s a huge plus. My search continues.

knocks you out – and lasts the night (usually)
Honestly, I only use 20-30% of a pill at a time when I need it. My problem is less about needing something to fall asleep than it is needing something to help me stay asleep. This amount does the trick – with the caveat that if I take too much then I will be sluggish and drowsy the next morning. For this reason I suggest using it sparingly when you need it – but not all the time if you can help it! When I did take it many days in a row, I never noticed any growing dependency on it though – so perhaps that is fine. I only use it when I need to reset my sleep schedule/catch up on sleep/travel and need to deal with jet lag.
