Treatment for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors is the first book to establish the theory and practice of a psychodynamic approach to treating body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (BFRBDs), such as hair pulling, skin picking, and cheek, lip and cuticle biting. Chapters set out a new framework for understanding and treating BFRBDs, one grounded in attachment theory and neurobiological research.

This is a must read book for therapists, parents, and those who skin pick or pull hair!
The compelling, rich case studies that Stacy wove throughout the book make this book a page turner– I was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out how her clients responded to her approach (spoiler alert– they all responded beautifully!). Stacy’s compassionate nature and authentic empathy for her clients comes through– her clients are fortunate to have found her, and the rest of us are fortunate to benefit from her wisdom and insights through this book. This book is a must-read for all therapists– whether or not you treat clients with BFRBs, her chapters on group therapy, family dynamics, closure, and relationship-building offer essential tips that go beyond BFRBs. And this book offers such compassion, healing, and insight for those who have BFRBs or who parent children who are skin pickers or hair pullers!

Refreshing, thoughtful approach to BFRBs
As a therapist and someone who has struggled with skin-picking, I was thrilled to learn of Stacy’s work. She lays out a clear, thoughtful conceptualization and treatment approach that is refreshing to someone who has been disappointed by the lack of knowledge about these disorders and frustrated by the CBT approaches. I hope more clinicians will read this book!!

Helpful for clinicians AND clients!
I am a therapist who also exhibits BFRBs and I can say unequivocally that this book has shifted how I view these behaviors for myself and my clients. It provides a through explanation and framework for BFRBs that has already proven useful in both my personal and professional lives. Instead of only focusing on behavioral change, the author thoughtfully suggests to understand what the function of BFRBs can be, where they can originate, and to remove the shame that often surrounds them. On top of this, there are great suggestions for actions to take to address these behaviors at their root cause, thus creating a blueprint for long-term and lasting change, on top of a greater understanding of self.It is a quick and easy read, while not losing any intellectual potency. This should be required reading for any clinician that works with those impacted by BFRBs, as well as anyone who may be impacted by them themselves.

Must Read if Interested in Psychodermatology
This is an easy-to-read book that supports the efficacy of a psychodynamic approach in the treatment of body-focused repetitive behaviors. Stacy does a wonderful job weaving compelling case studies with the practicalities underlying her therapeutic approach. Her patients’ treatment responses speak volumes to the work she does and warrants expanded use of psychodynamic therapy across the field of psychodermatology. Understanding the etiology between body-focused repetitive behaviors begets an understanding of the usefulness of a root cause approach. Many therapists and medical providers struggle with how to best approach these conditions, and this book is a great introduction to the world of psychodynamic therapy. This book not only benefits those who serve patients from a medical or therapeutic standpoint but also offers support and validation to those who personally struggle with body-focused repetitive behaviors.

Masterful understanding of Trichotillomania – picking and pulling
Stacy Nakell has specialized in trichotillomania for a long time in Austin. Having been to her trainings, I was excited about reading her book. Stacy does a masterful job of helping people to better understand the origins of behaviors they may have picked up as an early coping mechanism. Through this understanding, it can help to build new ways to help soothe themselves and increased understanding of what might cause distress. Having picking in my own background, I have found it very helpful.
